New Classic Style

Traditional style emphasizes proportion, symmetry and restraint. A traditional style home is refined and graceful with a regard to elegant, classical forms.

A traditional look is light, uncluttered, sophisticated and combines a regard for classicism, color, symmetry and detail.

Lights reminiscent of candles are well-suited to the elegance of the traditional decorating style. Traditional fabrics can encompass a wide range of styles, from large-scale chintz to muted stripes. Toile de Jouy is typical of the look, especially in blue and cream. Toile is easy to find today in a range of colors and patterns. It can be used for upholstery, table linens and curtains, although it is best displayed relatively flat in order to show the story which is printed on the fabric. Toile can be easily coordinated with checks, stripes and solid colors.

Framed art is a fundamental of the traditional style, with prints hung symmetrically or balanced with paired accessories. Landscapes and classical architectural drawings are appropriate for traditional living rooms, still lifes and portraits are suitable for the more private areas, like the kitchen and bedrooms.

Relaxing traditional furnishings include low, upholstered armchairs, sometimes with wings, sofas with scrolled ends and chaise longues. Symmetry should be emphasized in the placement of accessories and in the placement of furnishings.
